This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Ruslana Lyzhychko is not only Ukraine’s most successful female solo artist, she is also committed to social issues and the democratic development of her country. During the Ukraine protests she was on stage for up to ten hours each night inspiring and encouraging her people fighting for their rights. For that she received a Women of Courage Award. Through this talk she brings the experience of the protests at Maidan to a worldwide audience and shows the importance of citizens fighting for their political freedoms.
Ruslana Lyzhychko is a World Music Award and Eurovision Song Contest winning artist who is considered to be Ukraine’s most successful female solo artist. She is also well-known for her commitment to social issues.\r
In the autumn of 2004, Ruslana actively supported the democratic processes in Ukraine known as the ‘Orange Revolution.’ Providing a voice for the people, she was an outspoken member of the Ukrainian Parliament from spring 2006 to summer 2007. In 2006 she began working with the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) on the global issue of human trafficking and UNICEF appointed her Good Will Ambassador of Ukraine.\r
Ruslana became a leading figure in the protests in Ukraine that began in November 2013. Since the second week of the protests, she was on stage in Independent Square for up to ten hours each night. In order to demand support from the EU for the EuroMaidan revolution, Ruslana met with key EU officials in Brussels in January 2014. After her speech at the 495th Plenary Session, a resolution was adopted by the European Economic and Social Committee supporting Ukrainian civil society and its democratic rights. Due to her active role in the protests, Ruslana was named one of the top 10 most influential women of 2013 by Forbes magazine. She was also was named ‘Person of the Year’ by Business Ukraine magazine.
