The underground coal fire was accidentally started by burning trash in the town dump in May of 1962. The fire caught onto a surface coal vein and traveled far underground. Attempts were made to put out the fire by digging deep trenches to cut off the fire and pumping water underground but it was too little too late. The state deemed the underground fire as a hazard to residents and began buying out their property in 1981 and moving them out. Those that refused to leave were forced to move through Eminent Domain. Centralia remains one of the greatest accidental ecological disasters in Pennsylvania history.#centralia #graffitihighway
Check out Bright Sun Films documentary on Centralia. Jake managed to obtain a lot of historical video to tell the story of this town's demise. You'll see some of my footage in that documentary.
