Tom of Bedlam is one of the earliest songs about madness that was first introduced in 1618. Bedlam was a common name for St. Mary Bethlehem hospital in London (now called Bethlem Royal Hospital) which housed the insane. During the 18th century it was a popular diversion to visit the hospital to watch the antics of the poor inmates. Admission was one penny and it is said the hospital realized an income of four hundred pounds a year from visitors.\r

Lyrics:\r
\r
To see Mad Tom of Bedlam\r
Ten thousand miles I traveled\r
Mad Maudlin goes on dirty toes\r
Just to save her shoes from gravel.\r
\r
Yet will I sing bonny boys, bonny mad boys\r
Bedlam boys are bonny\r
For they all go bare and they live in the air\r
And they want no drink nor money.\r
\r
I went to Pluto's kitchen\r
Just to break my fast one morning\r
It's there I got souls piping hot\r
That on the spit were turning\r
\r
My staff has murdered giants\r
And my pack a long knife carries\r
To cut mince pies from children's thighs\r
with which to feed the fairies\r
\r
No gypsy slut nor doxy\r
Shall take my mad Tom from me\r
I'll dance all night, with stars I'll fight\r
But the fray it shall become me\r
\r
Spirits white as lightning\r
Did on my journey guide me\r
The sun did shake, the pale moon quake\r
Whene'er they did espy me
